Lucy Dickens | London
Lucy Dickens
Lucy Dickens’ subject matter varies widely, from the lively groups of people and everyday vignettes she is known for to a more spiritual and contemplative body of work. Having moved to Devon four years ago, time spent away from city life has ignited her imagination, bringing a new sense of freedom to her painting. With a focus on joyful subject matter, her work is as much a reflection of her home life and travels abroad as it is a celebration of living in a fascinating world.
Lucy’s desire to record what she sees is untameable, though more often than not, the ‘seeing’ stems from her fertile imagination. Her energetic canvases depict her travels around the world as well as far stranger, make-believe lands where viewers encounter surreal scenes such as wonky bridges and submarines floating in the sky. In other works, her muse, Wally the whippet, is playfully transformed into various guises, while majestic stags stand proudly in their ancestral homes.
Whatever the medium—acrylics, gouaches, or bold graphic fabric collages—Lucy’s work is always executed in her inimitable style, lightly peppered with her trademark sense of humour. Her art reflects both the rhythms of home and the inspiration drawn from her journeys, near and far.
Great, great granddaughter of Charles Dickens, began her career as a full-time artist in 1990. Having previously worked as a fashion stylist for Condé Nast, she became a freelance illustrator, working for publications including The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph and Vogue. She began to paint while writing and illustrating a series of children’s books, which were published in London and New York.
